Hairspray 2 Secrets Revealed

Hairspray - Madrid Premiere

We're not quite sure if we like what we're hearing. Hairspray director Adam Shankman is dishing on details of the movie's sequel - most of which are bizarre! - and if certain stars like Zac Efron will be returning.

He states that the new script treatment does indeed include Zac's character, Link Larkin (that would be a bummer if he didn't agree to be in it, which he hasn't done yet!). But as for the rumors that Link will be hooked on acid, "I think that’s probably part of the treatment that won’t get used. And in the treatment, [Efron’s drug use] is an accident,” he said. So in other words, the script currently does have Zac's character getting hooked on the drug, but it will most likely be removed. It is a family flick, after all!

The sequel will also introduce us to new villains (bye bye Brittany Snow and Michelle Pfeiffer?) and will feature the main character's mother, Edna (played by John Travolta). Unfortunately, Travolta's teen son recently (really recently) passed away. Will he really be up for filming the movie in time for its summer 2010 release?

Finally, you may be wondering what the title of this movie is going to be. No, they aren't just sticking the number next to the title. The current title is Hairspray 2: White Lipstick. White Lipstick was a fashion trend in the 50s and 60s, when the film is set. Also, White Lipstick was the original title for the Hairspray Broadway musical before it opened in 1988. The backdrop for the film will be the Vietnam War, and apparently someone will be drafted (although it is NOT Link).
